Wilkinson's relishing his Chester City opportunity

BEN WILKINSON has demonstrated his eye for goal so far this term.

The Chester City midfielder, son of former England caretaker manager, Howard, has netted twice so far this season, including Monday’s headed equaliser at Altrincham.

He said: “It felt good to get on the scoresheet with an equaliser at Altrincham, but I came away thinking I should have taken two other opportunities in the first half.

“But at least we’re creating chances which is always a good sign, and we feel we have the firepower to beat teams. But we’ve got to start doing than sooner rather than later.

“We were disappointed to come away from Altrincham with a draw because we all thought we played well enough to have won the game.

“But we gave a silly goal away in the first half and once we got back in it we thought we would then go on and win it.

“We now need to start picking three points up as soon as possible.

“It’s going to be really hard for us this season. We’ve worked out that we need 68 points, which is a lot, so it’s a big task, but we all believe we can do it.

“The first few games were difficult because we didn’t have a pre-season, but there are no excuses now.”

Wilkinson, who revealed he valued the views of his dad who normally watches him play, is profiting from a switch to the wing from his more accustomed central midfield role, added: “I worked with Mick Wadsworth while we were at Gretna and he plays me wide left or right because he feels I have a better chance of scoring goals from those positions.

“One of my objectives for the team is to try and score some goals, but Mick suggested I play out wide and I’ve been more than happy to give it a go.”
