A “THRIVING” hockey club in Powys is celebrating after being named Hockey Wales’ ‘club of the month’.

Presteigne Ladies Hockey Club has received praise from the sport’s national governing body in Wales, especially for the launch of its junior section in the midst of Covid, which has swelled in numbers since being set up.

Particular mention was made of Jess Goodwin and Leanne Evans, two senior figures who have been instrumental in the establishment of the junior section.

“Congratulations to Presteigne Hockey Club who is our Club of the Month,” said Hockey Wales, in a post that was shared on the Presteigne Ladies Hockey Club Facebook page.

“Below is a brief summary of why they deserve to be celebrated for their efforts: Presteigne Junior Hockey Club is thriving thanks to the commitment of Jess Goodwin and Leanne Evans who have volunteered their time to establish, grow and support the junior club by offering subsidised weekly hockey sessions to all ages from 6-18.

“Without their efforts there would be no children playing hockey in a very rural community.

“The juniors are so keen to play that it would be a real boost for them to be recognised for their commitment to the club, turning up every week with enthusiasm and impeccable manners.

“What a lovely group of children they are and they deserve to have their little club celebrated and put on the map.”

The recognition was described as “a lovely reward for a thriving little club” by the club on its Facebook page.

They added that the club is looking to further grow the junior section, saying: “Always welcoming newcomers between the ages of 6 and 18 to join our friendly little club.

“No experience necessary and all equipment provided. We are actively seeking more minis between the ages of 6 and 9 to join us in Presteigne Sports Hall on Wednesday evenings for hockey fun with Leanne.

“Please send us a message if you would like to get involved or receive more information.”
