Newtown 2 Barry Town Utd 0

JOE Kenton starred with a goal at the end of each half to fire Newtown to glory over Barry Town United and third in the table.

Both sides began the match with intent with the Robins going close inside the opening 10 minutes only for Ben Bailey’s header from Craig Williams corner to be tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Mike Lewis.

Newtown took the game to Barry with Nick Rushton’s shot blocked while dangerman Kenton narrowly failed to steer home a cross from the lively Sam Phillips.

Neil Mitchell tested Lewis before Barry mustered an attack only for Dave Jones to smother at the feet of Drew Fahiya.

Newtown snatched the lead on the stroke of the break with Lewis misreading a long ball with Kenton pouncing to send a looping shot into an unguarded net.

Barry started the second-half brightly with Fahiya firing over.

The introduction of Steve Leslie on the hour provided the hosts with extra spark with the Scotsman twice going close following his introduction.

Jones continued to be kept on his toes and gathered well under pressure from Kane McLaggon to smother Momodou Touray’s low right wing cross.

Newtown had a chance to settle the game with 10 minutes remaining only for Mitchell to steer Callum Roberts’ left wing cross over the bar.

Barry threw everything into breaking down the home side’s resolve and with seconds remaining the Robins capitalised with Leslie releasing Kenton who outpaced the stranded Barry defence to slot past Lewis and send Newtown into the top three.
