Llanelli 1 Newtown 3

NEWTOWN hit back to celebrate their first win on the road this season with a Friday night triumph at 10 man Llanelli.

The home side started well and saw penalty claims rejected inside the opening few minutes and led on 11 minutes when James Loveridge outpaced Callum Roberts to slot past goalkeeper Dave Jones.

Llanelli continued to press with Jordan Follows and Joe Clarke going close before Newtown replied with Nick Rushton capitalising on a rooted defence to race onto a long clearance to level on 32 minutes.

Steve Leslie almost gave Newtown the lead before the break only for his speculative effort to be saved by home goalkeeper Oliver Davies.

Both sides carved openings after the break with Loveridge going close for the hosts before the inform Neil Mitchell was denied by the feet of Davies.

The Robins were into changes on the hour with Leslie joined by injured goalkeeper Jones in making way for Sam Phillips and Jack Perry.

Just five minutes later and Newtown led for the first time with Mitchell maintaining his superb form with a crashing volley past Davies following Rushton’s accurate right wing cross.

The Robins took control of the game and were further boosted when home defender Anthony Finselbach saw red following an altercation with Jay Denny with 15 minutes remaining.

The Mid Wales side used their numerical advantage to good effect and with eight minutes remaining Phillips steered home to seal victory with his first goal for the club.
