It came down to the last game of the season but Menai Bridge secured it's third North Wales Cricket League premier division title on Saturday.

The Bridge only needed two points to secure the title heading into their final match of the season against Pwllheli at home, with a 44-run victory more then securing the title.

Menai Bridge 1st XI captain Dion Holden said it had been an amazing year and winning the title on the final day had made it all the more exciting.

Holden said: "Winning the league title this year has been amazing, we’ve definitely deserved it.

"Every single player in the squad we have used has contributed which makes it even more special, we’ve been the most consistent team by far.

"Every league title is just as special as each other, I suppose winning this one on the penultimate day of the season made it very exciting."

Holden won the toss on Saturday and elected to bat first on a very damp wicket.

The Bridge lost Luke Jones and Arwel Thomas early, to the bowling of Morgan Murray-Williams and Jason Underwood respectively, and it was up to Jack Gower along with his skipper Holden to steady the ship.

It was a captains knock from Holden's as his 65 was the backbone of the Menai Bridge innings and saw his side to 173 all out in the final over.

Gower and tail ender Ashley Wood were the other notable contributers with 19 apiece, while with the ball for Pwllheli Murray-Williams and Syed Kaleem Aslam were the chief destroyers with four and three wickets respectively.

From there the Bridge only needed three wickets to claim the two points they needed to claim the title.

It didn't take them long with overseas player Patrick Glover removing Owen Reilly and Chris Moore in his first two overs before Gethin Roberts knocked over Underwood to have the title wrapped up by the fifth over.

Holden said: "We knew we only needed two points to secure the league so when the third wicket went down we went mental."

Despite some resistance from Sean Reilly and Pwllheli captain Michael Hughes, who batted at 11 with a stiff neck, the bridge rolled through the penguins line up with relative ease - eventually having them all out for 129.

Glover was the pick of the bowlers with four scalps while Gerallt Roberts claimed figures of three for four from his four overs.

With the bat Hughes, who was the last man out, top scored for Pwllheli with 37 while Sean Reilly was the only other notable contributor with 29.

Holden said it had been a great season for the Menai Bridge, who were keen to bounce back after narrowly missing out on last year's title.

He added: "The highlight has to be going 12 games unbeaten at the start of the season and beating the top teams 15-0 at home.

"We put ourselves in a great position from there and it was always going to be tough to catch us.

"We’ve had six centuries between us in the league this year also, which tend to be match winning performances.

"It’s an area which we haven’t been as successful in the past and it was really pleasing to see.

"Our bowling unit has been as consistent as ever, having Patrick Glover opening up with Gethin Roberts has been great, with Ashley Wood and Gerallt Roberts (50 wickets) then coming on and continuing the pressure and picking up the wickets."
