PRESTATYN Sports advanced to the FAW Trophy third round and claimed derby day bragging rights with a hard-fought win at Meliden.

The Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One side were far from their best against their fourth tier opposition, but showed all their fighting qualities to dig out a result to ensure they booked their place in the hat.

A cagey opening to proceedings saw a number of robust challenges from both sets of players, with Sports finding it tough to break down the resolute home rearguard despite controlling possession for the majority of the first period.

Kris Owen carved out the best openings with a pair of long-range efforts which never really troubled the keeper, but the introduction of Ian Dunn at the interval proved to be the turning point of the tie.

The veteran forward added a sense of purpose to the visiting attack, and he broke the deadlock when he prodded home from close range after a Reece Chamberlain cross was headed back across goal by skipper Shane Middleman.

Mark Hughes and John Hargreaves’ men had two good opportunities to double their advantage and seal the tie late on through Darren Cassidy and Dunn, but they managed to see the game out in comfortable fashion to pick up the victory.

Also progressing to the next stage of the competition are St Asaph City, who put their disappointing league for to one side thanks to a resounding 3-0 home success over Mochdre Sports.

The Saints opened the scoring through Paul Fleming, with veteran forward Carl Murray and Corey Brewerton also on target for the hosts during the one-sided affair.
