BERRIEW Bowling Club and Newtown Bowling Club welcomed home their national champions this week.

Hazel Wilson, Caroline Taylor, Nerys Lewis and Isobel Jones overcame Pontyfelin 16-14 in a thrilling fours final at Carmarthen Bowling Club at the Welsh Women’s Bowling Association Finals last weekend.

Wilson said: “Berriew Bowling Club is delighted to win the Welsh fours title and look forward to representing Wales next summer.”

Meanwhile Newtown Bowling Club’s Christine Barr, Karen Hopkins, Hilary Owen and Gill James were crowned over 44s fours champions after beating Gilfach Bargoed 20-18 in the final.

Both clubs will now represent Wales at the Home Internationals in Jersey next June.

Taylor tasted heartache in the final of the singles with Laura Daniels of Brynhyfryd edging a 21-20 victory.

Meanwhile Mark Weaver of Montgomery tasted final defeat in the Welsh Men’s Finals weekend in Llandrindod Wells, going down to Kevin James of Cardigan 21-12.

Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club endured mixed fortunes, losing the senior triples while winning the senior fours title.

Brian Jones, Tom Evans and Ken Price slipped to a 23-14 defeat to Pontymister in the triples final with Price and Jones joined by Paul Watkins and David Sims in overcoming Dinas Powys 21-11 to be crowned national senior fours champions.
