THE first Get Newtown Moving event has been hailed a resounding success.

Newtown’s Town Hall grounds hosted the successful event, organised by Sport Powys and the Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) with the aim of increasing sport participation and highlighting other associations and groups in the town.

Clubs took turns in showcasing their sports to the community throughout the day information stalls and a display ring a hive of activity.

Newtown Rugby Club, Hafren Cycling Club, Newtown Tennis Club, Newtown Netball Club, Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club, Newtown Hockey Club, Newtown Short Mat Bowls Club and Clatter Archery Club all showcasing their clubs.

Co-organiser Jonny Roberts was delighted with the response from clubs and the large turn out.

“Both myself and Claire Powell are really happy with how it went,” said Roberts. “We want to thank everyone that had a stand at the Get Newtown Moving event.

“The support from these clubs and organisations was brilliant and invaluable to the success of the day.”

Roberts has already started planning for next year’s event and hopes it will become an annual part of the Newtown sporting and social calendar.

“We’ve been encouraged by some of the feedback we’ve received so far,” said Roberts.

“We look forward to hearing more from others involved on the day and hopefully we can return for a bigger and better event next year.

“Hopefully the clubs who supported the event will also benefit from an increased profile in the community and some of the youngsters present on Saturday will join some of Newtown’s sports clubs.”
