EMILY Curteis has taken up a prestigious football scholarship in America.

The Oswestry based former Llanfyllin High School student will arrive in New Jersey to complete a Master’s Degree at Rider University later in the summer.

The former Stoke City youngster will also link up with the New Jersey based Broncs football team as part of a two year scholarship arranged through PASS4Soccer Scholarships.

The opportunity arose after Curteis took part in a USA Coach Showcase held at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre last year.

PASS4Soccer director Daniel Gray said: “Emily has shown great desire throughout her time in our programme having first registered with us over six years ago.

“I am confident that her ability, maturity and character will be a huge asset to Rider University.

“Having assisted a number of players who have attended Rider University we know Emily will be well looked after and will continue to flourish in the USA.”

With university fees spiralling in the United Kingdom the option to enter American university ‘soccer’ programmes has appealed to all the more talented young players.

Curteis’ selection comes as reward for her academic achievements and athletic ability and will look to emulate the success of other graduates of the scholarship, including several who have joined Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs in America and English League sides.

Curteis said: “I chose to study in the USA as I’ve seen the positive impact it has had on my twin sister who is currently on a soccer scholarship as an undergraduate.

“The opportunity to continue my education while training in a professional environment seemed like a no brainer. I’m looking forward to studying, training and improving myself as a person and player.
