A HOST of emerging athletics talent represented their schools at the prestigious NASUWT Cup in Brecon on Wednesday afternoon.

The next generation of Powys sporting stars showcased their skills on track and field against their peers from across Wales.

Welshpool’s Scott Hockham was crowned under 14s boys shot put cup winner with an effort on 10.20m while Ellie Phillips of Llanfair Caereinion shared the under 14s high jump cup gold medal with a height of 1.35m.

Llanfair schoolmate Llanfair’s Carys Gittins also claimed silver in the under 14s girls discus cup with an effort of 18.24m.

Newtown claimed three bronze medals with Niall Bentley third in the under 16s boys shot plate with a throw of 10.63m, Dylan Downs third the under 16s boys triple jump with an effort of 10.04m and Tom Jarman third in the under 16s boys discus plate with a throw of 30.17m.

Meanwhile Llanfyllin’s Ffion Worthington and Lyndon Place claimed bronze medals in the under 16s girls shot put plate and under 14s boys javelin plate with distances of 8.22m and 25.72m respectively.

Powys stars also shone on the track with gold medals for Llanfyllin’s Deri McCluskey in the boys under 16s 1,300m and Newtown’s Polly Holloway in the under 14s girls 100m plate.

Llanfyllin’s Amber Bennett and Megan Wigley also claimed silver medals in the under 16s girls 200m plate and 100m plate with times of 28.45 and 13.53 respectively

Llanidloes’ Rhys Hesden claimed silver in the under 16s boys 300m cup in 38.00 while Welshpool’s Tom Fowler also claimed silver with a time of 2.26.93 in the boys under 14s 800m cup.

Newtown’s Olivia Robson celebrated silver in the girls under 16s 800m cup in a time of 2.35.80.

Llanfair’s Louis Tudor claimed bronze in 13.04 in the girls under 14s 70m hurdles with schoolmate Kelsie Webster’s 28.93 enough for bronze in the girls under 14s 200m.

Newtown’s Ryan Morris ended on the podium with his 41.63 sealing bronze in the boys under 16s 300m plate while Natasha Pryce also claimed a bronze for Newtown with a time of 13.43 in the under 16s girls 100m.

Dylan Downs completed a superb individual performance with his second medal of the day by claiming bronze in the boys under 16s 800m race in a time of 2.20.74.

Llanidloes’ Harry George completed Powys’ medal haul with a bronze medal in the boys under 16s 100m cup with a time of 12.09.
