Newtown boss Chris Hughes said he was expecting a "big season" from new signing Callum Roberts, as he ran the rule over a number of trialists during the Robins return to pre-season training this weekend.

The first team squad got together for a two hour session comprising mostly fitness work at Latham Park on Saturday, but he said the pre-season rebuilding work was far from complete as he looks to fine tune his squad ahead of the new season.

"It's good to meet up with the boys again, [it was a] good session, good numbers so we're in a decent positions and we're just building towards that first weekend of the season, that's what it's all about," he said.

"In the next couple of weeks we'll look to make some decisions over the trialists and obviously have a few more faces commit. I'm not one to start saying we'll have a squad of this many, I think if good players become available then we'll have a look at them, you'd be silly not to and that'll be the case from now until the season."

New signing Damien Allen was unable to meet up with the squad but will begin pre-season next week, while full-back Callum Roberts took part with the rest of the Robins team in baking hot temperatures as Mid-Wales basked in a seasonal spell of fine weather.

Hughes said the addition of 31-year-old midfielder Allen, a standout performer for Bangor City and Aberystwyth Town in recent years, shows how far the club have come in terms of attracting players.

"You've got different ends of the spectrum [with Callum Roberts and Damien Allen]. You've got a young player who's making his way in the game and you've got an experienced player who's been there, seen it and done it and that's the type of player we want to see. A couple of years ago signing someone of Damien's calibre would have been unheard of at this football club. But it shows how far we've come that when players of that calibre are available they want to come and help us progress.

"Callum obviously is a player who's been with us for four or five months, he knows how we operate, knows the standards that we expect and we're looking for a big season from him."
