A POWERLIFTER from Newtown has broken a British record at her first World Powerlifting Championship in Canada.

Emily Lloyd Whittington, 21, flew out to Calgary to represent Great Britain in the 63kg junior ladies class and extended her British record with a 177.5kg deadlift.

It was her first time as a competitor at the World Powerlifting Championships and her second international championship competition.

The Manchester University student won four golds - squat, bench, deadlift and total - at the Commonwealth Championship in South Africa last September, beating the British record with a 175kg deadlift.

She won the Under 23 title at the 2017 All England Powerlifting Championships and came second at the Junior British Powerlifting Championships in November, where she twice broke her own British record.

Whittington only started powerlifting two years ago and has since represented England and broke three English and a British record in South Africa.

“I’m very competitive and I just wanted to prove that I can be stronger than my brother,” she said. “It’s an empowering sport both mentally and physically. It is a challenging sport but I’m really excited to represent my country.”

Speaking before the World Championships, the former Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd and Caereinion High School pupil said: “I’m aiming to achieve the same outcome as I did in South Africa. I won four golds and broke a British record. This time I want to break it again.”

The Whittington Family, led by parents Terryanne and Nigel, travelled to Calgary and brought some Welsh support from Newtown.

I can always rely on deadlifts 👌👌Here are my 2 attempts from IPF Worlds, and extending my BRITISH RECORD. 🎉🎉Attempted a huge 185kg for my 3rd for a podium place in the deadlift, but it just wasn't in me that day... it's coming. This deadlift finished in 4th place...not too bad for in the World, but I've tasted podium place...and I want it and more!! 🥇🥇🥇Thanks to @arunranasingh and @stoneface_pl for handling me all day, it was 100% a stressful one, and of course @sbdapparel for supplying the goods and my family and friends for supporting here and back home...and the man the myth the legend, @tommartinpl for coaching and supporting everyday xx -165kg/363lbs -177.5kg/391lbs (2.5kg comp pb) @62.31 bw ______________________________________________ #coachingbytommartin #ewpower #welshpowerlifting #powerlifter #powerlifting #girlswhopowerlift #girlswholift #gbpf #powerliftingchicks #strengthtraining #strength #benchpress #bench #squat #deadlift #ipf #motivated #determined #strengthshop #sbd #sbdapparel #getbettertoday @girlswhopowerlift @welsh_powerlifting @sbdapparel @strengthshopuk
