ANDY Davies was crowned Montgomeryshire Sports Personality of the year at the annual regional sports awards in Newtown on Friday.

The Newtown marathon runner was presented with the accolade at Newtown’s Hafren Centre as the great and good of Montgomeryshire sport came together for their annual celebration.

Davies was recognised for his outstanding 2017 which included representing Britain at the World Championships and securing a place in the Welsh squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

Montgomeryshire based under 18s hockey international Fergus Stephens won the under 18s award while Newtown football player Carrie Jones won the under 14s accolade in recognition of her emergence as a future national team prospect.

Caersws kick boxer Halle Vaughan won the under 12s award after a superb 2017 which included being crowned WKU 25kg champion while also medalling at WKU International and Grand Slam Series.

Newtown’s Ryan Cook won the disabled sports personality accolade in recognition of his displays for the national disability football team and coaching role at Newtown Whitestars Junior Football Club.

Newtown based Hafren Cycling Club won the Club of the Year award while Newtown Rugby Club’s Paul Herdman was named coach of the year.

The Volunteer of Year award was presented to Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club’s June Jones while Newtown’s Tayla Trigg was crowned Young Sports Leader of 2017.

Llanfyllin squash team won the senior team of the year with Llanidloes’ show jumping team claiming the junior award.
