BUILTH Wells Rugby Club director David Jones has backed the rejuvenated Bulls to claw themselves away from the relegation zone in Swalec Division One West.

Last weekend’s thrilling 12-12 draw at home to runaway league leaders Whitland boosted confidence within the ranks, that the Bulls can march to safety in the second half of the season.

This weekend Builth could take another massive stride toward their goal, when they take on Bridgend Athletic.

“We are playing like we are going for the championship not fighting for our lives against the drop,” said Jones.

“Our confidence was evident against Whitland last weekend. Having beaten us by 40 points or so at their place, they arrived here expecting a walkover but after 10 minutes they realised they were in a game.

“It will be another tough game at home to Bridgend Athletic this weekend but the mood in the camp is great.”

Much of the Bulls’ revival is owed to the appointment of Jeremy Pugh, as head coach, with an unbeaten record over his three games in charge.

It has also allowed wing John Thurston more time to work on his own kicking game, which has already seen the Bulls reap the rewards.

Thurston kicked all 12 points against Whitland to save his depleted side a share of the spoils, in their season long battle against the drop.

Jones said: “John has been fantastic this season and you would struggle to find a better kicker in the league on his day.

“However there has been a complete turnaround across the park with all the lads playing their part in our revival.

“We must keep on playing for each other and battling for every ball but if we can maintain our current level of form then I can see no reason why the lads cannot pull the club out of danger.”

The Bulls round-up January at Bridgend Athletic before entertaining Narberth in their only February fixture.

March will be key to their campaign with successive home games against Cwmllynfell, Bridgend and Felinfoel, before rounding up the season with a trip to Narberth in early March.

Meanwhile the club have welcomed back experienced former Pontypool and London Scottish prop Melfyn Lewis, from Newtown. Serving soldier Lewis has made an impact for Gogledd Cymru Division Two South side Newtown this season and helped them to the semi-finals of the North Wales Intermediate Cup.
