North Wales Cup

COBRA 19 Mold 12

A SOLITARY try from Frazer Roberts earned COBRA passage to the quarter-finals, while dumping Mold out of the competition.

Mold enjoyed a dream start when wing Luke Jones went over in the corner, but the conversion was missed to allow COBRA back into the game, with outside half Llew Williams successfully navigating two penalties to see his side open a slender advantage.

Mold put COBRA under pressure at the beginning of the second half, but were unable to break the defensive line with the midfield trio of Llew Williams, Iwan Vaughan and Frazer Roberts putting in telling tackles, while scrum-half Alwyn Williams and the back row won a string of turnovers.

Mold became ill-disciplined and began to regularly concede penalties, with Llew Williams adding a further penalty kick to stretch the lead to 9-5.

The game was effectively won when outside centre Frazer Roberts stripped his opposite number of the ball and raced clear from the halfway line to score under the posts, with Williams kicking the extras and a further penalty to give COBRA victory.

Jamie Winning crossed for a late consolation try, but it was not enough to take the gloss of another excellent COBRA display, who now face Bala in the last eight.
