Gogledd Cymru Division Two
COBRA 31 Newtown 5
COBRA claimed their fifth win of the season and maintained their 100 per cent record, with victory over Newtown in a Mid Wales derby.
COBRA opened the scoring through a penalty from outside-half Llew Williams and never looked back with two more successful kicks at goal following from the dependable number 10 to stretch the lead.
The first try of the afternoon came courtesy of a well worked driving line-out that resulted in prop Bryn Edwards touching down after some fine driving play from his pack colleagues.
Williams converted before adding his fourth penalty of the game, before scrum-half Alwyn Williams nipped through the Newtown defence, as COBRA opened an unassailable lead.
The second-half started with Newtown attacking and retaining the ball well and their reward was a try from outside-half Joe Murray, after some good running by their forwards allowed their centre to run through.
The second-half became a scrappy affair littered with handling errors and poor passing, while the hot weather also made for testing condition for both sides.
With 10 minutes remaining COBRA upped the tempo and were rewarded when captain Aled Davies pushed over from close, suffering a blow to the head in the process, which left him dazed and confused but still claiming the final try.
