THE misery is almost over for Newtown with their final home match of the season ending as a damp squib.

Long before the tie with Albrighton, the home side knew it would be their final Premier League game at the Recreation Ground ahead of structural changes to the league.

However with just two wins on the board from 21 games, few could argue Newtown do not deserve their end of season demotion.

Albrighton skipper Darren Shimmons (40no) shuffled up the batting order and was joined by Ishmael Anwar (32), Joe Roberts (28), Rob Law (37) and last man Matt Askin (25no) in posting 184-8.

Ali Laird, Craig Davies and Jon Davies were the pick of the home attack, with Newtown left with a difficult challenge in response.

Newtown’s top order was once again led by captain Steve Davies who made 48 before his dismissal, while Ricky Davies added 27 before the heavens opened to end their challenge after 21 overs.

n While Newtown have endured a torrid campaign, their second team have come along in leaps and bounds in the reserve league this term.

Their latest victory saw Keith Powell take a prominent role in a 43 run victory at Albrighton IIs.

Having lost star opener Dai Brown for a duck, the Newtown innings was revived by Danny Wilson (30) and Chris Bound (28.)

Powell upped the run rate with a splendid knock of 73, with Martin Lewis (27) and Dave Powell (18) guiding their side to 201-8 to defend.

Stuart Edwards (3-45) included Powell among his victims, while Mark Astbury (2-53), Andrew Humphries (1-46) and Mark Stevens (1-30) also made inroads.

Albrighton were immediately under pressure with Danny Wilson claiming the opening two wickets, while Chris Bound (2-20) removed Stuart Edwards for 11.

Newtown had struggled with the form of Huw Bevan before he was caught and bowled for 43 by Jordan Morris (1-31,) to prompt Albrighton’s demise.

Wilson ended his 13 overs with 4-63, while Martin Lewis (2-17) also took vital wickets as the hosts were dismissed for 158.
