Castle maintain strong start

BISHOPS Castle came out on top by 54 runs at home to Iscoyd and Fenns Bank in division one.


Despite the early loss of Edgar Whately and Richard Fifield the Castle innings was kept on track by Andrew Lewis with a knock of 43.


Richard Plant (28) kept things going in the middle order, with Rhys Davies (38) and Jake Cintra (35) pushing Castle to a closing total of 202.


Tom Leah (5-30) led the wicket taking for Iscoyd, with Jake Chaplin (3-39) in support.


Stephen Morris (1-26) took the crucial wicket of Tom Wynne for 45 in reply, while Gerald Jones ran out the equally in form Paul Gresty for 35.


Paul Winfield was bowled for 32 by Richard Plant (2-10), with Simon Palmer (2-25) and Mark Griffiths (3-41) dismissing the visitors for 148.


Elsewhere Montgomery IIs hung on for a draw at Oswestry IIIs in division four.
Kevin Evans struck a half century for the hosts, with Iwan Roberts (35) and Paul Baker (28no) pushing Oswestry IIIs to 221-8 to defend.


Tom Wilkinson (3-61) led the Monty attack, while there were also wickets apiece for Charlie Clinton (1-38) and Ned Hayes (1-21).


John Barker opened Monty’s reply with a half century only for Evans (4-22) and Dave Shaw (2-14) to decimate the middle order, as the visitors hung on at 156-9 for a draw and 10 points.


Elsewhere Alberbury IIs hung on for a draw at home to Calverhall.


Opener Kevin Neville (65) laid the foundations with a splendid knock, with Robert Wilkinson (46) pushing Hall onto 203-7.


Alex Hughes (3-55) was the pick of the bowling attack with support from Preston Fletcher (2-32).


Only Hughes (26) and John Green (29) offered resistance in reply, as Alberbury struggled to 144-9 and a share of the spoils.


Welshpool IIs just narrowly failed to complete the job at home to Ludlow IIIs in division five.


Captain Dan Chodecki led Welshpool to 188-8 to defend with a fine knock of 62, with support from Matt McWhinnie (37) and Adam Knight (33).


James Gerritse (5-25) and Craig Simmons (2-45) shared the wickets for Ludlow.
Despite a half century from Richard Powell in reply the home side were on top, with Matthew Knight (3-23) seeing Ludlow hang on at 133-7.


Local rivals Guilsfield were two wicket winners at Overton in division five.


Dan Brown (4-21) and David Hughes (3-45) restricted Overton to 172 with Richard Lumsden top scoring with an unbeaten half century.


Brown (40) and Harris (49) also starred with the bat, with support from Dave Hughes (29) and David Jones (23) seeing the Guils to 173-8.


Meanwhile Bishops Castle IIs prevailed by two wickets at St Georges IVs in division six.


Paul Cottrell (4-36) was joined by Dan Palmer (2-56) and Paul Moulder (2-23) in limiting St Georges to 178 all out, with Dave Chesters (58) and Chris Cousins (57) top scoring.


Cottrell made a patient 47 in reply with an unbeaten knock of 38 from Peter Griffiths seeing Castle to 179-8 and a two wicket win.


Elsewhere Alan Williams starred with bat and ball as Welshpool IIIs savoured a 52 run win at home to Prees in division six.


Williams fired a tailend 34 after a knock from Callum Preston (36), with Phil Richards (4-33) dismissing Pool for 138 and in reply Prees were all out for 86, with Williams (5-41) and Peter Davies (5-43) on fire.


Alberbury IIIs claimed a draw from their division seven clash at Oswestry IVs.
Sahim Zaza (3-22) and Jamie Brooks (2-35) restricted Oswestry to 195-8, with Matthew Smart (63no) leading the runs.


Nick Reman opened with half century for Alberbury but a bright bowling display from Smart (3-40) and Dave Hartshorn (3-37) ensured the visitors were hanging on at 166-9.
