North Wales Intermediate Cup Final
Llanidloes 35 Menai Bridge 5
LLANIDLOES overcame third division champions Menai Bridge to end the season with the North Wales Intermediate Cup.
Having missed out on promotion to division one on goal difference Llani arrived at Dolgellau RFC’s Cae Marian ground as strong favourites to take home the silverware.
Such pre-match predictions were well-founded as Llanidloes opened the scoring with a penalty from Dan Short, before wing Sam Vaughan went over for a try in the corner.
Menai Bridge mustered a reply with centre Dave Williams crossing to reduce the lead.
Short kicked another penalty, before full-back Adam Price completed a slick passing move to crash over wide out in the right corner, for an interval lead of 16-5.
Menai were a different team after the break and restricted Llanidloes to possession in their own half.
Constant forward pressure saw them cross the goal-line three times but fail to ground the ball cleanly and turn pressure into points.
Llanidloes coach Jordan Davies introduced several experienced substitutes and capitalised on a tiring Menai defence.
Prop James Plumridge crashed over from close-range for a try which Short converted with the fly-half adding a penalty to his tally.
Short maintained his kicking accuracy after converting a try from replacement flanker Anthony Mills, before Gareth Anwyl powered over for a try to complete victory.
