MACHYNLLETH ended the campaign on a high before coach John Davies began plotting for next season.

An improved run since the turn of the year propelled the side away from the basement, before securing their second division status this month.

“The main difference was that we were able to re-group over Christmas and get a squad for every match,” insisted coach Davies.

“Next season we hope to maintain the improvement and we can do this with a few new signings.”

Outside centre Iwan Jones crossed for a crucial first-half try, which was converted by outside-half Alun Hughes as Mach led.

Newtown responded with an accurate penalty from centre Matthew Jones before half-time.

Machynlleth increased their lead after the break, with outside-half Hughes going over with outside centre Iwan Jones converting.

Town reduced the arrears with a late penalty from Matthew Jones but it was not enough to prevent Mach celebrating derby victory.

Newtown coach Derek Murray said: “It was a good derby and a well contested clash.

“The second division is a tight league and although we would have liked to have ended higher we have shown a lot of promise this season.”
