IN 1948 the counties of Brecon and Radnor established a joint fire brigade to cover the two counties in fire-fighting and fire prevention.
The new authority planned the building of 13 new purpose-built fire stations. Rhayader Fire Station was the last one to be completed just one day before the authority's life came to an end with the formation of the Powys Fire Brigade following another government re-organisation.

On March 30, 1974, the Fire Station, built on the site of the old Malt House, East Street, was opened by County Councillor W. J. G. Evans, chairman of the joint committee.

The Fire Station was built by Osbornes, of Builth Wells, and is described by a reporter of the day as: "A fine looking, functional building of which any force could be proud."
