WHEN the Co-operative Insurance Society office in Newtown closed in March 1994, it also marked the retirement of two staff who have given nearly 80 years of service between them.
Jim Burton was the district manager and had been with CIS for 33 years, the last 20 being in charge in Newtown,

When he arrived at the branch from Birmingham, the store was the third from bottom in the company merit table, but under Jim's management, they rose to third best in the country.

To mark his retirement, Mr Burton planned to travel the world and spend more time with his wife and two children.

Also retiring was chief clerk, Margaret Griffiths, who has worked at the Newtown office for 46 years - her entire working life. Amazingly, in her time at the CIS, she has only worked under three managers.

In celebration of her retirement, Margaret travelled with her husband Frank to Canada to visit friends and relatives.

A retirement dinner was held for the duo at the Plas Talgarth Health and Leisure Club in Machynlleth.
