MARGARET Pritchard, a sales assistant from Bettws Cedewain, was celebrating being named Newtown Carnival Queen in April 1972.
She was chosen to be Queen at a dance held in the town, beating off competition from more than 20 other girls.

The 18-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Pritchard, of Talbot, Bettws, was employed at Pryce-Jones' store in the town and upon winning said she was very keen on horse riding.

"I am very pleased to be named Carnival Queen. The carnival is always one of the best days of the year and I am really looking forward to it," she added.

Four attendants were also chosen at the dance, which was held at Pryce-Jones Ballroom. They were Janette Richards, Elizabeth Wilkinson, Hazel Owen and Janette Walters.
