National success for Welshpool children

A TEAM of school children from Welshpool became National Road Safety Champions in July 1958.
The team, made up of David Pugh (pictured), Joan Thomas, Eryl Davies and June Jones, had already become Welsh champions earlier in the year, but after beating Dagenham 67 - 63 in the final in London, each member won a bicycle and a holiday to Madeira.
To win the competition, the team had to answer a series of questions on the Highway Code, watched by Clement Davies, MP.
The final was held at Caxton Great Hall, with 400 people watching.
Perhaps the star of the team was David Pugh, who one of the judges said: "Will probably become a barrister."
