BACK in 1977 a Machynlleth woman decided to try her hand at growing tobacco and came out with a good first harvest.

Mrs Sue Ellis, then 39, from Trowain, Machynlleth bought a small packet of seeds from the Tobacco Association in January 1977 and planted them in a box on the window in the kitchen.

She moved the plants to the garden outside in May where they thrived.
Mrs Ellis is pictured in October of that year when she had started to cure the leaves anticipating a crop of around 26lbs.
