IT WAS a lonely life for the only member of Mid Wales Ski Club in 1954.
Captain Udny Raikes was more used to the snowy slopes of Austria and Switzerland rather than Montgomeryshire.

But Captain Raikes, who resided in Cwmsidwell, Kerry, near Newtown, decided to ski down the hills of Powys in February 1954 after some snowfall.

But all was not good for Captain Raikes, who described his journey from Kerry to Newtown as 'rather tedious'.

He said: "The run from Kerry was rather difficult. Because of the lack of sufficient speed and pebbles on the road, it became rather tedious.

"I also had to catch a bus back to Kerry as there are no cable cars in Newtown."

Captain Raikes was medically discharged from the Indian Army in 1930, so took up skiing in Austria and Switzerland.

He soon set up the Mid Wales Ski Club, where he utilised the hilly terrain to his advantage.

"Doing this also saves the francs," he added.
