Four Crosses woman collects over 78 tons of waste paper
Published Date:

A FOUR Crosses woman raised over £1000 for the Red Cross in 1977 after salvaging over 78 tons of waste paper over a seven year period.
The colossal undertaking became nearly a full-time job for retired school matron, Miss Ethel Edwards, 71, of Shaftesbury, Four Crosses, who was the local Red Cross group leader and the former commandant.
Miss Edwards organised rounds in the district and collected the paper through all kinds of weather, with many people also bringing waste paper to her house. The paper was stored in 28 pound bundles in her outbuildings.
The last of the salvaged paper was collected by Messrs. Parry & Evans, of Pool Quay on the morning of Wednesday, September 21, 1977.
