THIS week we remember the bravery of a Welshpool man who risked his life in an attempt to free a driver trapped in a blazing car.
Mr Charles Geoffrey Cooke received a citation for bravery from the Society for the Protection of Life from fire in October 1977.
In November 1976 a car collided with a cyclist and crashed into the gate posts at the Lichfield Lodge entrance to Weston Park at Weston-under-Lizard.
Mr Cooke, who was living there at the time, heard the crash and saw that the engine of the car was on fire and that the driver was trapped so tried to release him.
Chief Inspector Jones said of the incident: "He looked up and saw that the petrol tank was ablaze and suddenly a sheet of flame passed over him and one half of the car was ablaze."
After a second attempt to release the driver, the heat became too intense and Mr Cooke had to get away after which the petrol tank exploded.
Mr Cooke received the award from the mayor, Councillor A. Smith and Police Chief Inspector H. H. Jones.
