Bishops Castle celebrated the anniversary of the 120th carnival in style.

The traditional procession left Church Bank at 1pm in glorious sunshine led by Parade Marshal Bernard Edwards, followed by the Carnival Queen, Emma Gwilliam with her attendants Sinead Kerswell, Emily Ellis, Tayla and Aiva Robertson. The theme of their float was English Country Garden and they were resplendent in purple, lilac and white.

The Carnival Princess Megan Morris followed. Megan’s attendants were her cousins Phoebe Jones and Chiara Ireland-Morris along with her friend Poppy Bavastock on a Fairy Woodland themed float.

The next vehicle in the procession was a 1932 Alvis car supplied by John Powter and in this vehicle, was the Retiring Queen, Donna Hughes along with Katie Barkley, the retiring Carnival Princess. Following them was an array of floats, along with vintage tractors, lorries and a steam engine.

The carnival was officially opened by Bernard Edwards and Donna Hughes, the retiring Carnival Queen crowned the Queen, Emma Gwilliam and Katie Barkley, the retiring Carnival Princess crowned Megan Morris, this year’s Princess.

There was a wide range of activities on the field for the crowds to enjoy and the carnival was very well attended.

The winning floats with the theme TV through the Ages and in first place was Gareth Sayce with his tank float, second place went to Bishops Castle Beavers as Bear Grylls and third place was awarded to Gareth Sayce’s mini steam engine in the topical category. In the comedy category first place was awarded to the Hockey Club with their Scooby Doo float and second place went to The Three Tuns as The Simpsons. In the fancy category, the Carnival Princess float was awarded first prize and second prize went to the Carnival Queen float.

In the walking classes prizes were awarded to the following: under eights category – 1, Harvey Woodhouse as Harry Potter; 2, Finlay Jones as a Knight; 3, Alf Jones as Harry Potter and 4, Lewis Wynne also dressed as Harry Potter. Over eights - 1, Lily Bance as Simon Cowell; 2, Olivia Griffiths. Sixteeen plus –  1, Melanie Cole. Group category – 1, Robertson Family as the Wizard of Oz; 2, Jones and Lane family as Star Wars and 3, Davies family dressed as cowboys. The Grimes family won the Baby and Buggy/Preschool category dressed as Super Heroes. Judging was carried out by Wayne and Michelle Jones, along with John Parry, Stuart Dicken and Lisa Evans.

The best maintained vehicle was given to John Powter in his 1932 Alvis car and the best vintage tractor was awarded to John Butler. The trophy for the best pub float went to The Three Tuns as the Simpsons and the cup for the overall best float was awarded to Gareth Sayce for his tank float.
