The entrance to Welshpool's Victoria Memorial Hospital was flooded and nearby properties at risk as flash floods cascaded through the town following this morning's thunderstorms.

The town's fire service said they were receiving multiple calls regarding flooding incidents and were advising people to avoid the town centre this morning as the rain continues to fall.

The UK was struck by lightning between 15,000 and 20,000 times on the evening of Saturday, May 26 and the morning of Sunday 27, according to the Met Office.

Parts of Wales and central England could see further thunderstorms on both Sunday and bank holiday Monday, with the Met Office warning of the possibility of power cuts and delays to trains and buses.

One Gungrog Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I've never known it so bad, I've lived here all my life.

"My cellar is flooded, and so are my neighbours on both sides. We're waiting for sandbags at the moment as the water is getting near to the door, but the fire crews are very busy up at the hospital.

"There's another few hours of rain forecast so we're just hoping it doesn't get too much worse."

Elsewhere Salop Road was closed at around 9am this morning at the petrol station due to deep water lying on the road presenting a risk to traffic passing through.

Welshpool's fire service said via twitter: "We’ve had multiple calls this morning to #flooding incidents in Welshpool and surrounding areas. Please avoid the town centre if possible, especially Salop road. Only drive if necessary. "

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Temperatures overnight did not fall much below 15 or 16 degrees. For the end of May that's a pretty hot and humid night, so everything was primed.

"We had some storms coming in from northern France and some building up in the Channel and they sort of spread out and have been working their way in."
