Pupils from schools across Montgomeryshire became young engineers for the day.

The Mid Wales Manufacturing Group (MWNG) ran a Futureproofing Engineering Skills event for almost 700 primary and secondary school aged children and young people at the Welshpool Livestock Market last week.

The event highlighted the range of opportunities available to young people within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industries in Mid Wales. Manufacturing and engineering in Powys employs more than 5,000 people but the industry is facing a skills shortage.

Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils from Welshpool High School and pupils in years 5 and 6 from primary schools in the Welshpool area including, Buttington Trewern, Arddleen, Forden, Guilsfield, Leighton, Berriew and Montgomery got involved in the fun activities.

Ceri Stephens, group manager for MWMG, said: “Our thanks go to all the volunteers and helpers from Upscience, Myrick Training and the CITB who all came together to ensure that young people in the region were able to take part in this day and gain a greater understanding of the opportunities that are available to them locally in industry.”

MWMG will be holding a factory visit to Dawson Shanahan in Welshpool aimed at young people on Thursday, March 22, from 4pm to 6pm. To reserve a place, visit the website or call 01686 628778.
