The head-teacher of a Radnorshire primary school spoke of her pride in the "good work and positive attitude" of her pupils this week - after it was brought out of special measures.

Estyn inspectors have given Llandrindod Wells County Primary School the green light for the first time since 2016, saying pupils’ standards of achievement across the school had improved considerably at the school.

Ms Karen Jenkins, Acting head teacher at the school said she was proud that the hard work of staff and children has been recognised by the inspectors.

"To be out of special measures is something I am especially pleased about, as it is recognition of the very hard work everyone has put in at Cefnllys. However, we are not complacent and we realise that while this is a positive step forward, there are still issues to address," she said.

"I am really proud of the staff at my school, who have all worked extremely hard and pleased that the good work and positive attitude by pupils has been reflected in this Estyn report.

"A much more exciting curriculum is now on offer and this is enjoyed by the children. We will continue to closely monitor children’s work to ensure that standards continue to rise."

A poor report in 2016 saw the school placed in special measures, after inspectors criticised poor attendance records and what was described as 'variable' teaching levels which had 'little impact on raising standards'.

But in their 2018 monitoring report, the Estyn inspection team praised the school for 'moving the school forward at a pace' across the recommendations, which included raising pupils’ standards of achievement, improving attendance and ensuring teaching meets the needs of all pupils.

"Llandrindod Wells Primary School is judged to have made sufficient progress in relation to the recommendations following the core inspection in October 2016," the report reads.

"Since the core inspection, pupils’ standards of achievement across the school have improved considerably in most subjects and areas of learning. Most pupils have positive attitudes to learning and have developed great pride in their work and achievements.

"The acting headteacher has rebuilt staff confidence through strong and focused leadership. This has improved staff motivation and enthusiasm to raise the standards that pupils achieve. "
