A popular TV couple took on the challenge of the World Alternative Games in Llanwrtyd Wells last week.

Stephanie and Dominic Parker – known as ‘Steph and Dom’ to fans of the Channel 4 show Gogglebox – came to Llanwrtyd Wells for an online TV series.

The couple took part in wife carrying and husband dragging, and to find out more about the World Alternative Games, which takes place between August 10 and 27.

After a day practicing at the Waen Rhydd Bog, they then spent a whole afternoon taking part in a staged competition, organised by World Alternative Games committee members, and supported by local people, who turned up to cheer them on.

Steph, 51, said: “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever let my husband run through a stream, and over obstacles, while carrying me on his back.”

“But we’re game for a laugh, and after the initial shock of discovering our challenge, I can honestly say it was great fun, though I can’t see us taking it up on a regular basis!

“I’d never heard of wife carrying, and was shocked at how popular it is as an activity, and how many people turn up and have a go during the World Alternative Games,” she said.

“But I think once will be enough for us.”

After completing the wife carrying, the couple, who run a guesthouse in Kent away from their TV duties, then tried their hand at husband dragging, another popular World Alternative Games activity.

“Once again, we were totally out of our comfort zone, but once again we actually had a lot of fun,” said Dom, 53.

“Dragging me around the course was Steph’s poetic justice after our wife carrying experience; it was crazy, but a great experience to take part in – I can imagine what a wonderful atmosphere there must be around these events during the World Alternative Games.

“The local people who turned up to support us were fantastic, and we were made extremely welcome throughout our stay in Llanwrtyd Wells, and I recommend everyone to come and join in the fun of the World Alternative Games this summer.”

Karen Perkins, secretary of the World Alternative Games organising committee, described it as ‘a pleasure’ to host Steph, Dom and the film crew.

“We never stop being flattered at the attention we attract for Llanwrtyd Wells all over the country, and, indeed, the world, through putting on the World Alternative Games, and this is another example of TV stations spotting the great fun potential from visiting us.

“Steph and Dom were great sports, we’ve had lots of laughs, made new friends, and put our town on the map once again,” she said.

“I cannot thank the local community enough for the support they gave us by turning up to cheer Steph and Dom on when they actually took part in a wife carrying and husband dragging race, and it was just an enjoyable couple of days.”
