WAS this the greatest goal ever scored? Well MP Lembit Opik certainly thinks so.
He wants the Houses of Parliament to recognise a Montgomeryshire League Division Two goal as one of the greatest ever.
During the game last Saturday between Montgomery and Trewern, the home side's keeper spotted the keeper off his line, stepped back, and lobbed him from all of 78 yards.
Mr Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, praised the goal scoring skills of Montgomery Town goalkeeper Steve Goodwin in a parliamentary motion tabled recently.
The motion states: "That this House considers Steve Goodwin's goal in the match between Montgomery and Trewern on April 26 to be one of the greatest and most spectacular goals scored in the history of British football."
Lembit added: "I look forward to seeing more of the same sublime football playing in the near future from my local team. With inspirational moments like these, who needs Euro 2008?
"This goal keeps Mont FC's promotion hopes alive and kicking."
Montgomery Town beat Trewern 2-0 in the game.
And because of Lembit's intervention, the Montgomery number one has surprisingly found himself immortalised alongside characters such as Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and Benjamin Disraeli in the parliamentary records of Hansard.
