THOUSANDS of pounds worth of diesel has been stolen from Radnorshire farms since the recent price rises, according to Dyfed Powys Police.
Temporary Inspector Andrew Geeson has warned farmers and business owners to take special care guarding fuel tanks after a recent rise in thefts.

Insp Geeson, who is the community safety officer for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: "The recent price
rises have encouraged thieves to target fuel tanks at farms, goods yards and other places of business across the county.

"Some of these tanks can store thousands of pounds worth of fuel and it is probably worth considering a review of your existing security measures."

Insp Geeson said following some simple steps may make the thieves' job more difficult and could save thousands of pounds.

He said: "These points include positioning of the tanks. While no-one wants a diesel tank right outside their window, hiding them away gives the thieves a great opportunity to access the tank without being seen.

"Fuel tanks should be sited where they are visible from nearby homes and not hidden behind outbuildings or large machinery.

"The tanks should also be in a secure building and the electricity supply should be turned off when the tank is not in use and locking devices should be fitted to all tanks.

"While a determined thief will come prepared with a range of tools, a good locking device could make all the difference."

Insp Geeson also said a secure valve – rather than a nozzle or a hose, which would remain vulnerable to cutting – can help put thieves off, as could additional security measures, including CCTV and additional lighting.

"I would also like to point out that anyone found running their vehicle with 'rebated' red diesel is very likely to have that vehicle seized and be subject to stringent financial penalties," he added.

"If anyone is offered cut price fuel it is likely to be stolen and or rebated, usually referred to as 'red diesel' and it should be avoided and reported to police."

For further information regarding fuel thefts or any other aspect of crime prevention, please do not hesitate to contact Insp Geeson on 0845 3302000 ext 50460.
