THE conservatives were the big winners in Montgomeryshire's Powys County Council election.
They picked up six seats having not held a single one prior to the election.
Former AM and prospective parliamentary candidate Glyn Davies said: "This must be one of the best results for the Conservatives across the UK."
Newtown's results provided two of the biggest shocks with established county councillors Bob Davey and Richard Noyce both beaten, with Peter Harris and Frank Torrens the respective winners.
One of the most lively campaigns had been fought in Llanidloes and Gareth Morgan, retained his seat despite a strong challenge from Nick Venti.
Two of Welshpool's established County Councillors also fought of strong challenges to retain their seats.
Anne Holloway beat Mark Howells by 426 votes to 353 while Francesca Jump retained her seat against the challenge of Montgomeryshire's last Tory MP Delwyn Williams by 443 votes to 350.
More results will be placed online later. For the full results and reaction, see next Friday's County Times.
