MP Lembit Opik issued a challenge to the Department of Transport over a controversial new electrically powered vehicle when he drove it through the sodden streets of Newtown yesterday, Thursday.
The MP for Montgomeryshire has already driven the Segway PT (personal transporter), together with other Parliamentarians, from Parliament to the Department for Transport in London, and now in a fresh challenge to the Department, in a bid to take a more positive view of these eco-friendly transporters, he has been parading it through Newtown.

The new device, known as the "Segway PT," is a battery powered two-wheel vehicle capable of carrying a person at speeds of up to 12 miles an hour. Its range of up to 24 miles makes it highly flexible and convenient in rural areas, small towns and large cities.

However, questions about its legality have prevented its wide scale roll-out in the United Kingdom.

Lembit said: "The British Government seems paralysed with indecision. On the one hand, they say that the Segways PT isn't legal. On the other hand, they are unable to point to a single scrap of evidence in British law to show WHY they should be banned.

"Over 750 police forces and security firms around the world already swear by them. They're already in use in Heathrow Airport, where 60 million people pass through every year.

"For all these reasons, I've decided to take a stand. I'll be joining members of the public and politicians to challenge the Government to either have us arrested or to accept that not doing so means the Segway PT is in effect legal transport from Tuesday onwards. After all, if they don't prosecute us, there's no justification for them to prosecute anyone else. And if they DO arrest us, how will that look to the thousands of police officers already using them around the world?"

Good on you Lembit, if the Police want it, tell the government that.
