TWO new supermarkets could soon be arriving in Machynlleth.
Supermarket giant Tesco has confirmed it has bought the old Travis Perkins site in Heol y Doll, while Harry Tuffins are currently in negotiations with HG Jones and Sons, Station Garage.
After exclusively breaking the news about Tesco's forthcoming arrival in Machynlleth last October – allegations which at the time were denied by Tesco officials – the County Times can now reveal that Harry Tuffins are the latest supermarket chain t
o show an interest in moving to the town.
Spokespersons from both Station Jones and Harry Tuffins have refused to make any comment regarding the sale, although confirmed negotiations are taking place. Station Jones also confirmed they are giving up their Ford franchise.
Harry Tuffins already have stores in Churchstoke, Bishops Castle, Craven Arms, Ludlow, Knighton and Cleobury.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Tesco said they were unable to give any details, such as the scale of the site, as they were still trying to assemble it, and therefore could not give any information as to how many jobs the new store would create or when it was likely to open.
However, it was confirmed that Tesco are currently in talks to buy the Machynlleth farmers' mart – situated behind the old Travis Perkins store – which reading between the lines could mean the new supermarket will be lager than initially anticipated.
"We have made one acquisition and are currently working on a site assembly. When we have finished that we will hold a full public consultation before we submit an application to the local authority," said the spokesman.
"We have identified the need for a store in Machynlleth as the vast majority of people living in the town are travelling to Aberystwyth to do their shopping.
"We are also in early negotiations to buy the Machynlleth farmers' mart."
Machynlleth's county councillor Michael Williams claims the news will have huge implications on the town and as a result careful consultation must now take place.
"There must be a full and meaningful consultation because the implications of Tesco arriving in Machynlleth are huge due to the large number of small businesses in the town," he said.
"I am sure these independent business men will want their say, as will the general public, because while many are delighted at the possibility of a supermarket giant like Tesco arriving there are also those who feel it could be detrimental to small businesses.
"Tesco has promised us meaningful consultation and that is what they must now deliver!"
Cllr Michael Williams was less concerned at the implications of Harry Tuffins arriving in Machynlleth, adding: "Harry Tuffins are a very successful organisation who have a number of stores in the local area.
"I only ever hear good reports about Harry Tuffins when I go into a town that already has one."
