Curious schoolchildren mistook Merton mayor Nick Draper for a king as they visited council headquarters.
Pupils from Stanford Primary School in Norbury were shown around the library, civic centre and council chambers on October 13 as part of London Democracy week.
One of the youngest asked "Is that the king?" when shown a photo of the mayor.
Another asked if he was a lord.
Teacher Kay Campbell says she hopes the children would benefit from learning about how adults organise and run society.
The pupils will report back to the rest of the school later this term.
