LLANFYLLIN Town officials faced a clean-up operation with less than a week to go before the new Spar Mid Wales League campaign after vandals broke into the ground.

Dyfed Powys Police are currently investigating after vandals breached the ground's defences before setting their sights on the Martyn Digwood stand.

The vandals proceeded to tear up bucket seats and caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Chairman Phil Ellis condemned the "mindless acts" of the vandals who left a number of beer cans and bottles strewn across the pitch.

"We had acted to improve the defence around the ground to provide some added security so we are disgusted someone has still gone to some considerable effort just to damage Llanfyllin Town Football Club.

"We are a community club and we urge anyone who knows the identity of the culprits to get in contact with a club official."

The stand was built and dedicated to long-serving clubman and player-manager Martyn Digwood who died following a road accident in Italy while supporting the national team in 2003.

The stand was named in Digwood's memory and opened 13 months ago with the latest strike of vandalism leaving club officials angry and disappointed

Ellis said: "Obviously the culprits had been drinking but it's no excuse for mindless vandalism."

Police officials have swept the area for fingerprints and will launch a full investigation into the incident.
