A DYNAMIC duo from Trewern will be following in the treadmarks of Michael Caine in The Italian Job next month when they take part in an offbeat rally in which they will be raising money for the Wales Air Ambulance.

Ian Garbett and Phil Lewis (pictured left), who will be team 38 or 98 on the Crumball Rally's Italian Job rally from Boulogne to Turin and on to Monte Carlo and Nice on September 5, 6 and 7, are pictured with their car in front of the Air Ambulance helicopter based at the Mid Wales Airport, Welshpool.

Ian and Phil have already raised more than £850 in donations and sponsorship.

The 1994 Vauxhall Astra diesel is being modified to cope with the tough mountain roads ahead of them.

The Crumball Rally Co organises budget car rallies inspired by favourite car and driving themes taking in some of the most famous film settings with competitors taking part in cars that cost no more than £200.

Starting at the French channel port of Boulogne, the first day's route will take them around 420 miles through the heart of the Champagne region to the ancient city of Besancon.

The second day involves around 250 miles into Switzerland, past Lake Geneva and stunning mountain passes through the Alps, including the awesome Grand St Bernard, and into Italy and Turin, scene of the film's gold robbery and the famous big car chase.

The final day involves another 200 miles or so via the magnificent Col du Tende and opulent Monte Carlo, along the French Riviera and into Nice.

You can follow their progress during the event on youtube and can donate via the Justgiving Trewern Whacky Racers Fundraising Page on the internet.
