EMILY Bronte’s gothic tale of tortured love, Wuthering Heights, premiers at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Wednesday-Saturday, March 16-19 at (7.30pm) – in a new production from Aberystwyth Arts Centre – before later travelling to both Brecon and Newtown.
Long before ‘Twilight’ stirred the emotions, Wuthering Heights embodied the eternal pull between good and evil, dark and light, and heaven and hell.
This exhilarating and vibrant adaptation of the literary classic brings to life the all-encompassing love between the silent, brooding Heathcliff and the emotionally unstable Catherine. Their destructive relationship is one of the most enduring love stories of English literature. In many ways the love triangle of Heathcliff, Cathy and Edgar is the 19th century equivalent of ‘Twilight’s Edward, Bella and Jacob.
First broadcast as a Radio 4 drama in 2003, Aberystwyth-based writer Lucy Gough has now adapted the work for the stage, and under the directorship of Mark Babych (formerly artistic director of the Octagon Theatre, Bolton) the production promises to remain true to the original story and to transport audiences to the wild and windy moors for an emotional night of theatre.
Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s production has been made possible thanks to the support of a group Welsh theatres and organisations including Creu Cymru, Theatr Mwldan, Theatr Brycheiniog, Taliesin Arts Centre and The Riverfront, with support from The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
