One-way system 'will be good for Welshpool'

WELSHPOOL’S one-way system will work and could help small business in the town, according to the chairman of the North Powys Federation of Small Businesses.

Branch chairman Steve Kaye, who is also a Welshpool Town Councillor, is urging people to be patient with the town’s new traffic system.

“Once the road works are all sorted out I am sure the one-way system will make it quicker for people to get from one end of the town to the other,” he said.

“I am sure the new system will do more good for the town than harm but I do urge people to be patient and give it time to settle.

“I have no doubt that Welshpool will flow better with a one-way system, but if it doesn’t I will be there all guns blazing trying to sort it out.”

Mr Kaye has also welcomed the arrival of Tesco but says Powys County Council must offer free parking in the town if small businesses are to feel the benefit.

“A few years ago a survey revealed that 75 per cent of people living in Welshpool were travelling to Oswestry or Shrewsbury to do their shopping. If we can get those people coming back to Welshpool then we are laughing.

“But because Tesco will be offering free parking at their store it is of vital importance that Powys County Council offers some form of free parking on Church Street car park, otherwise there is the risk people will shop at Tesco and leave.”

Mr Kaye concluded: “For the past 100 years nothing has really happened in Welshpool and now a lot of things are happening quite quickly.

“Everyone involved wants the best for Welshpool.”

Well, isn't the council doing well with Mid Wales' Traffic? Welshpool's road system knackered... Newtown's road system knackered... Who's next?
