HUW Owen led by example with two captain’s tries inspiring Llanidloes to their third victory of the season over old enemy Newtown.

Having already beaten Town once in the league and ended their Swalec Bowl dreams, the Cae Hafren side started as justified favourites.

Centre Owen starred with a brace of converted tries, which outside-half Adam Pryce converted, with the latter also kicking a first-half penalty.

A pair of penalties from the reliable boot of Newtown centre Matthew Jones kept the visitors in contention at the break.

Llanidloes took control after the interval with Pryce and winger Sam Vaughan crossing for tries, which were both converted.

Newtown played their part in a cracking cup tie, with two late tries from full-back Nathan Lloyd, but this season’s bragging rights belong to Llanidloes.

Coach Jordan Davies said: “We have beaten Newtown three times in all competitions this season and the lads deserve recognition for this.

“We are playing some great rugby at the moment and two back-to-back derby wins sets us up nicely for our big Swalec Bowl match.”
