RISING sports stars in Presteigne will be awarded with shields in memory of the town’s late and great Dennis Lancett.

Lancett was a popular player for both Presteigne Football Club and Presteigne Cricket Club throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and the trophies will be given to those who excel in those two sports.

“Dennis always enjoyed his sport and particularly his time playing for his hometown clubs, so this seemed a very suitable way of remembering him,” said his widow Phyllis.

“I am delighted to present the shields on behalf of the family and we hope they will help encourage young sporting talent.”

Presteigne Football Club chairman Alan Randell received the shield on behalf of Presteigne St Andrews FC.

“It was very good of the family to remember the club in this way and I am delighted to accept the shield on behalf of the club,”

“It will be presented in tandem with our most improved player award which is handed out at the annual dinner,” said Randell.

Presteigne CC spokesman Trevor Owens added: “We are very pleased to accept this shield and are delighted that Dennis chose to remember his home-town clubs in this way.

“We have a number of rising stars within our Sunday side who will be pushing for places in the league team next season so there is bound to be strong competition for the shield when it comes to presentation evening.”
