COUNTY Times deputy editor Mark Lingard's 2011 Half Marathon Challenge will begin in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, in February, and end in Cardiff in October.

Mark – who has only ever completed one half marathon before, in Cardiff – is bidding to run 12 half marathons in less than 10 months in support of Macmillan.

Starting in Sleaford on February 20, and ending back in Cardiff in October, it promises to be a tough year, and a pretty tough tour of what the UK has to offer.

Races planned for the year include Silverstone, Liverpool, Edinbugh, Sheffield and the English Half Marathon, in Warrington. Others will be confirmed at a later date.

He said: “Cancer touches the lives of so many people, so I hope as many people as possible will get behind the County Times fundraising appeal and help raise cash for Macmillan.

“Macmillan provide an incredible service at the point where families truly need it.

“I am also hoping some readers will take up the challenge and join the Cardiff Half Marathon team in October. While 13 and a bit miles may seem daunting, I really mean it when I say if I can finish the race, you probably can...”

Mark added: “I enjoyed Cardiff, although perhaps not the last mile, so the challenge should be fun – although I might regret saying that. Hopefully readers will help by sponsoring me, every pound goes to a fantastic cause.”

More details will be added later, including how you can join Mark for the final race of the 12 – the popular Cardiff Half Marathon which takes place in the middle of October. Training blogs and news will be online during the course of the challenge.
