A LLANFAIR man has been given a three-month restraining order and been ordered to carry out 80 hours of community service after pleading guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Simon William Howells, 30, of Llanfair Caereinion, pleaded guilty to assault by beating at Welshpool Magistrates' Court.

Margaret Roberts, prosecuting, told the court that Howells had been in a relationship with Louise Coward which had broken down before the incident. She said that in the early hours of October 10 Miss Coward awoke to find Howells in her bedroom.

He was drunk and tried to talk to Miss Coward about text messages he wrongly believed she had sent to his friend.

He then leant over and said: “You know when you really want to kick someone’s teeth in.”

Howells then lay on top of Miss Coward to stop her moving, but she was able to push him off and told him to leave, which he did.

Police went to his house and found him in bed asleep. When he was arrested he told police he saw the door to Miss Coward’s house was open and said he had ‘been stupid’.

In interview with police he said that he had seen the door was open and  went to see if she was all right. He said he had no intention of hurting her because he loved her to bits.

Huw Williams, mitigating, said: “Clearly this is a regrettable incident.”

He added that Howells had since started a new relationship and was planning to move to Liverpool. He also told the court that there was a low risk of him re-offending.

Howells was given a 12-month community order and was told he will have to complete 80 hours of community service.

He was also given a three month restraining order, preventing him from contacting Miss Coward and ordered to pay £85 costs and £100 compensation.
