WALES team captain Michaela Breeze has retired from competitive weightlifting with a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The 31-year-old 2006 champion, whose family hail from Llanidloes, was beaten by 18-year-old Nigerian Obioma Okoli in the 63kg category, who finished with a winning total of 211kg.

Breeze was ahead after the snatch having lifted 92kg to Okoli's 90kg but she only managed 110kg on the clean and jerk, while her opponent made 121kg.

"I came here to win gold but I'm delighted to get silver," said Breeze.

"It's especially welcome after all the injuries I've had. It's the end of an era and an 18-year career.

"For me it's the right time to call it a day and pass it on to the younger lifters. It's been a tough year but I've had a few messages of support from back home."
