A PACKED train carrying passengers on the Llanfair and Welshpool Light Railway has been involved in a collision with a 4x4.
Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident which took place at around 11.20am on Thursday, September 16.
Eye witnesses told the County Times that a 4x4 towing a trailer had pulled into the New Drive crossing and failed to stop before it collided with the train's engine.
Police attended the scene although the driver of the 4x4 had already left, having given his details to train staff.
Richard Newby, who was driving the train at the time of the collision, said: "I could see it indicating to turn in . I honestly thought he'd stop, he had a trailer on the back and I thought he was just waiting until that was clear of the road.
"We were only doing 10mph and coming up there I was hanging on the whistle because I could see him indicating."
He added: "As far as I'm aware this is our right of way."
The 20 tonne engine, called The Earl and built in 1902, sustained only minor damage to paintwork in the collision.
Robert Robinson, the guard on duty on the train said: "It was straight forward really. The train was coming up normally and a driver was coming up from Welshpool and drove up next to it and pulled into it.
"The safety procedure was followed immediately. I removed the staff from the train, that means it can't move, we then protected the train by putting flags out and then we telephoned the office to report what had happened."
He added: "The train was fine but the car was pretty knackered. We were just lucky that no-one was hurt."
After checking the train over and staff speaking with the police it was able to continue it's journey to Llanfair at 11.55am.
