WELSHPOOL Town Council has identified a suitable location to build allotments, the County Times can confirm.

Green fingered residents in the town have been fighting for allotments to be built in Welshpool for approximately three years without much joy, but that could soon change following a site at Golfa bank becoming available.

Welshpool Town Council committed to finding land for allotments to be built on as part of their ‘Future of Welshpool Plan’ back in 2007.

Welshpool Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, said: “The issue has been rumbling on now for about three years but I think we have now found a suitable site at Golfa bank.

"We have been trying really hard over the years to find a suitable plot but it has not proved as easy as it may sound. Land near the Flash was offered but was not an option due to access problems, as was land at Pool Quay, but that was not an option due to access onto the main trunk road.

“But now we have identified a site with an approval target date of September. The allotments could then be available for April 1, 2011.”

The issue will be discussed by members of Welshpool Town Council’s finance and general purposes committee on Wednesday and will go before full council on September 22.

Robert Robinson added: “In total we have looked at 18 different sites but we are now confident we have found a site that we can make work.”
